Many aspects of my life changed since I started budgeting. This mainly came about by going through each category and assessing what was important and what wasn’t. More accurate wording is “what makes me happy and what doesn’t”. I say this because I still spend way more in certain categories that can’t be deemed “important” but it makes me happy and therefore I don’t deny myself everything that gives me pleasure. I do not see a budget as a way to deny myself what I want but a way to GET it.
That’s from one of our 20 finalists for the success stories competition (now closed).
This is a critical point. If you’re using the budget as some type of financial self-torture, you’re doing it in an unsustainable (wrong) way.
It’s a way to GET the things you want, within the constraints of reality.
