We are looking for a full-time Digital Marketer to join our small-but-mighty marketing team. You are creative, curious, collaborative, analytical and a wee bit OCD about The Numbers. This isn’t your first rodeo—mobile marketing, cross-platform advertising, social media campaigns, email marketing—and if Google Analytics is the Wild Wild West, you’re Billy the Kid. (We might have taken that metaphor too far—it will be your job to help us make those determinations in the pursuit of messaging that sticks.)

That’s a super-brief intro of what you’ll be working on. But first, you need to know if you’ll even like working with us. (We think you will.)
We build the best budgeting software around, YNAB or You Need a Budget if you have a lot of extra time on your hands. For more than a decade, people have been buying YNAB and then telling their friends what a difference it has made in their lives. (Google us, or read some of our reviews on the app store, and you’ll see what we mean.) We love building something that has a huge positive impact on people’s lives.
We’re profitable, bootstrapped, and growing. YNAB started in 2004 and we haven’t taken any outside funding—we’re in it for the long haul.
We have one overarching requirement when it comes to joining our team: our Cultural Manifesto has to really click with you. If you’re nodding emphatically while reading it, you’ll probably fit right in, in which case, we can’t wait to hear from you!
First, let’s talk about life at YNAB and then we’ll go into detail about what we’re looking for.
We work really hard to make working at YNAB an amazing experience. We have a team full of truly exceptional people—the kind you’ll be excited to work with. Here’s how we operate:
We’re a distributed team, so you can live and work wherever you want. Proximity doesn’t influence productivity. As I write this, Taylor (our CTO) is in, London or Brazil, or maybe back in Austin? Not all of us travel so extensively, but the fact that he does is totally okay because we’re all adults. Just make sure you have a reliable internet connection.
We rarely work more than 40 hours per week. There have been a few occasions where things got a little crazy and people had to log some extra hours. But then they took some extra time off, so it all balances out. We work hard and smart but we’re in this for the long haul, no need to go crazy on the hours.
We want you to take vacation. In fact, we have a minimum vacation policy of three weeks per year (plus two extra weeks for Christmas break). It’s important to get out and do something. We’ll look forward to seeing pictures of your vacation in our internal chat room, creatively named #office_wall.
We get the whole team together once a year to catch up on spreadsheets and powerpoints in a Best Western conference room. Just kidding. Last year it was in Costa Rica. This year is a gigantic cabin in the mountains. We do really fun things, but the highlight always seems to be just hanging out together and having a blast.
We’re serious about helping you improve your craft. We budget for it (hey-o!). Think conferences, Lynda subscriptions, dedicated time away from work to learn something new,… it’s really up to you and your manager. But we love to see our people growing.
We have a Traditional and Roth 401k option. YNAB contributes three percent whether you choose to throw any money in there or not. It vests immediately. Up until this point, everyone on the YNAB team has simply bought their own insurance. It’s kept things simple. We thought that was best, but we’ve changed our tune. It’s time to provide group coverage. Our plan is to roll out group health insurance early next year.
If this sounds like your ideal environment, read on because now I want to talk about you. You will play a big, big part in helping YNAB become a household name and hundreds of thousands of people get control of their money. You will change lives. I’ll only say that six more times.
We have a strong brand and a very loyal user base. For years, word of mouth has fueled our growth. But we’re ready to turn up the volume in a big way and we need your help.
You are an experienced marketer who lives for the data. Not because you simply love algorithms (although that’s OK too!), but because you understand the depth and breadth of the insights the data reveals. You love to draw concrete lines between your marketing efforts and the bottom line. And you do it with a freaking Sharpie.
If a marketing campaign succeeds but there is no way to measure ROI, does it make a sound? You know how to answer this one.
To this end, you know Google Analytics really well. Like, really well. Universal analytics, multi-attribution reports, campaign tagging and gotchas—this is your happy place.
You are creative and never met a brainstorm you didn’t like, but hold the phones, you’re also process-minded. Quick to outline and refine the steps to turn successful marketing strategies into repeatable, optimizable, and automatable best practices whenever possible.
You understand the fine art of email marketing and can segment and retarget a list with the best of them.
When it comes to mobile marketing, you have the experience to take us from zero to 60 in an impressively short period of time.
You are technically-minded and can help us evaluate, integrate and implement new marketing technology products as they come on the scene, at the current rate of 37 per day. (Sidenote: You know how to say no to most every new marketing technology product that comes on the scene, at the current rate of about 36.95 per day.)
This is a new position with a lot of unchartered territory and we’ll look to you to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and communicative. Our marketing goals for the next year are ambitious and this role will be a big player in YNAB’s subsequent growth.
