We’re Hiring Two People That Want to Positively Impact the Financial Lives of Hundreds of Thousands

How’s that for a headline? And I mean every word of it. We’re hiring for two separate part-time positions: a teacher, and a teaching assistant. You can certainly apply for both (just submit a separate application for each).

Woah there. Before you go applying for two new jobs, you need to know if you’ll even like working here. We think you will.

A Bit About YNAB

We build the best budgeting software around, called “You Need a Budget” or “YNAB” if you’re busy. For over a decade, people have been buying YNAB and then telling their friends what a difference it has made in their lives. (Google us, or read some of our reviews on the app store, and you’ll see what we mean.) We love building something that has a huge positive impact on people’s lives.

We’re profitable, bootstrapped, and growing. YNAB started in 2004 and we’re in it for the long haul. We haven’t taken any outside funding from investors or creditors.

We have one overarching requirement when it comes to joining our team: be a great culture fit. Our Cultural Manifesto has to really click! If you’re nodding emphatically while reading it, you’ll probably fit right in and we can’t wait to hear from you.

First, let me sell you on the idea of working with us at YNAB. Then we’ll talk about the two positions.

How You’ll Work at YNAB

We work really hard to make working at YNAB an amazing experience. We have a team full of truly exceptional people—the kind you’ll want to work with. Here’s how we operate:

Live Where You Want

We’re a distributed team, so please live and work wherever you want. Proximity doesn’t influence productivity. As I write this, Taylor (our CTO) is (still) in Italy. I’m not sure where he’ll be next. Not all of us travel so extensively, but the fact that he does is totally okay because we’re all adults. Just make sure you have a reliable internet connection.

Take Vacation (Seriously)

We want you to take vacation. In fact, we have a minimum vacation policy of three weeks per year (plus two extra weeks for Christmas break). It’s important to get out and do something. Post pictures of your vacation in our internal chat room, creatively named #office_wall.

The YNAB Meetup

We get the whole team together every 12 months and have a great time. Best Western conference room, powerpoints for hours…and lots of budget talk. Just kidding. Last year it was in Costa Rica and we just reserved a ginormous cabin in the mountains for October 2015. We do really fun things, but the highlight always seems to be just hanging out together and having a blast.

For a little preview of the fun, here is a video of our Costa Rica trip:

International is Absolutely Okay, Pay Attention to our Timezone Needs on This One Though

If you are Stateside, we’ll set you up as a W2 employee. If you’re international, you’ll be set up as a contractor. Employee or contractor, it’s all the same to us. You’re part of the team. (We are spread all over the world: Australia, Switzerland, Pakistan, Scotland, Canada, and all over the United States.)

If You’re Stateside…

We have a Traditional and Roth 401k option. YNAB contributes three percent whether you choose to throw any money in there or not. Yes, even for part-timers. It vests immediately.

Other Tidbits

  • Once you start, we DEMAND (in a friendly, ALL CAPS IS YELLING way) that you fill out your “Bucket List” spreadsheet with 50 items. (That’s harder than it sounds!) YNAB then helps you knock off a significant item every few years.
  • The bucket list also really helps in deciding what we should give you for your birthday and Christmas. No giftcards here. We tried that. Super boring.
  • We have a bonus plan, based on profitability. You’ll be in on that from day one. YNAB wins, you win. That kind of thing.
  • Did I mention we make a huge, positive difference in people’s lives? You may not think that matters much, but then a few months down the road you’ll realize it’s made your job really, really enjoyable. Don’t underestimate this one!

If this sounds like your ideal environment, keep reading, because I want to talk about you next. Both positions below, play a big part in helping people succeed at budgeting and using YNAB. These positions are fundamental to teaching our users how to run YNAB like a pro through our live, online classes. This is an opportunity to change lives. I’ll only say that six more times.

PART-TIME YNAB TEACHER

Our live online classes are very popular and we’re seeing more and more people in attendance every day.  Our customers love coming to class and getting their questions answered by our team of experienced YNAB Teachers. We’re looking for another part-time teacher to help us reach more West Coast customers by running more weekend classes and weeknight offerings convenient for those in the Pacific time zone. You’ll teach classes on the YNAB method, help people untangle debt and credit cards, and explain how to use the software to — wait for it –really change people’s lives.

About You…

You’re a teacher, right down to your toes. You can’t imagine anything more rewarding than helping people learn.  You also love YNAB, and the thought of combining those two passions has you super excited.  You’re also a fan of technology and the idea of teaching online and reaching people across the globe fascinates you.

You’re our person if:

  • You love teaching and helping people learn.  You enjoy breaking down complicated problems so people who are struggling can understand them easily.
  • Not only do you love teaching, but you’re an experienced teacher or instructor.
  • You use YNAB and know it very well. You’re a YNAB success story.
  • Your delivery is dynamic, energetic and engaging.
  • You love being a member of a team. You can give constructive feedback and embrace it to improve your own skills.
  • You’re also technically quite savvy. You know your way around a computer, you’re comfortable with smartphones, and you’re always looking for new ways to make your job more efficient and effective. You love learning new applications. Since you’ll be teaching online, you’ll need to understand how to navigate and access information from different programs behind the scenes.
  • You can multi-task and don’t mind being put on the spot. Teaching a live online class requires running a web conference and teaching at the same time–all while being asked multiple questions about budgeting and YNAB. What we’re saying is, you’ll need to be quick on your feet and have fun doing it!
  • You can work from home (or anywhere quiet), as long as you have a fast, broadband connection (DSL or better*) and a second monitor.
  • You run YNAB on your mobile device. (You’ll need to display that in class.)
  • You can show empathy.
  • You play really nicely with others. You’re flexible. You adapt and adjust. You love constructive feedback because it helps you improve. You’re passionate about learning. (Did we mention passionate about teaching and about YNAB?)

*700Kbps is the minimum bandwidth for simultaneous screen sharing, video and audio conferencing.

Hours

Hours will vary depending on how many classes we are running, but we are looking for someone who can work about 10-20 hours a week. You need to be available on US weeknights (PST) and weekends. We need someone who is available weekend nights as well, though not every weekend night. We’re looking for someone with schedule flexibility. You can take a look at our current schedule to see when classes run, but we are hopeful this position will help us offer more classes.

Pay

Pay will be determined based on experience. However, we like to hire awesome people and pay them well. If you’re looking for a range, it will be somewhere between $22 and $30 per hour. Sound like a great fit? We look forward to hearing from you!

How to Apply

Apply here by March 15th, 2015 (please read the detailed steps on that page).

PART-TIME WEBINAR TEACHING ASSISTANT

In our classes, we try to have an assistant in the class to help by answering questions in the chat window and helping with any technical challenges the class members have. This is a huge help and a key to a great class. And that’s where you come in!

We’re looking for a part-time webinar teaching assistant who can help us reach customers on the West Coast by assisting classes that are friendlier to the Pacific time zone, as well as on weekends.

About You…

You love YNAB and you love helping others. But you’re not a fan of the spotlight– you’d rather be behind the scenes making magical things happen. Oh, and you’re a multi-tasking genius who is great under pressure.

Sound like you? You might be our next YNAB Teaching Assistant. You’ve got one eye on the learning: scanning and processing questions being texted over by attendees and looking for the best ones to highlight for the teacher. You’re directly responding to other questions in chat, offering wise advice on implementing the YNAB method and software. Your other eye is on technical issues. You’ll support the teacher with materials and system checks, deal with attendees with audio issues within the webinar, and manage our free software giveaway at the end of class (all while those questions we mentioned are rolling in). Most people think that sounds crazy, but you love it because you thrive in this type of environment.

You’re our person if:

  • You love helping people. You’re quick on your feet and thrive under pressure.
  • You can explain things with an economy of words. Think Tweets.
  • You use YNAB and know it very well. You’re a YNAB success story.
  • It’s a bonus if you have a background in training or education.
  • You’re also technically quite savvy. You know your way around a computer, you’re very comfortable with smartphones, and you’re always looking for new ways to make your job more efficient and effective. You love learning new applications. You need to understand how to navigate and access information from different programs behind the scenes.
  • You can type fast! During the webinar, you’ll be asked multiple questions about budgeting and YNAB. You’ll need to be quick on your feet and have fun doing it!
  • You can work from home (or anywhere), as long as you have a fast, broadband connection (DSL or better*) and a second monitor.
  • You can show empathy.
  • You’re friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful, creative, flexible and passionate. (Did we mention passionate about YNAB?)

*700Kbps is the minimum bandwidth for simultaneous screen sharing, video and audio conferencing.

Hours will vary depending on how busy we are and how many classes we are running, but we are looking for someone who can assist 10-15 hours a week and has high availability on US weeknights and weekends in the Pacific time zone. That’s when most of our customers are available to attend. You can take a look at our current schedule to see when classes run, but we are hopeful this position will help us offer more classes.

Pay

Pay will be determined based on experience. However, we like to hire awesome people and pay them well. If you’re looking for a range, it will be somewhere between $13 – $17 per hour. Sound like a great fit? We look forward to hearing from you!
