Working at YNAB Fortune Best Places to Work

YNAB Lands on Fortune's “Top Places to Work” List

Written by Rachel Ellen  |  on

What’s it like to work at YNAB? Well, in short, it’s pretty great. We’re over the moon to be listed on Fortune’s Top Places to Work for the second year in a row. We’re a team of full-fledged budget nerds, and boy we just feel like we had a bit of a Cinderella moment with that coronation.

YNAB Rankings

But don’t worry, we’re still us.

What It’s Like to Work at YNAB

When you ask the people here what working at YNAB is like, a few things regularly surface.

“Gossip isn’t really a thing here.”

Can you even imagine a world where you don’t talk about how the new intern showed up in Crocs? Or how on Wednesdays we wear pink? Sure, it helps that at a remote company you can’t actually see the new intern’s choice of footwear, but really—it’s not a thing. Gossip just shrivels up and dies here.

“I can have a family and still work.”

Hold the phone—are you saying YNAB discovered work/life BALANCE?!

Certainly not, that balance is a mirage anyway. What we do mean is that you can pick up your kids from school every day and no one bats an eye. You can take time off as a new parent (mom OR dad, adopted OR biological) and you get to fully unplug from work to focus on this new chapter. We have families, you have families, we respect that.

“THE PEOPLE. The people! No seriously—the people!”

We work with great people. When anyone joins the team, there’s one overarching requirement: our Cultural Manifesto has to resonate with you, you know, pretty deep down. If it strikes a chord with you, you’ll probably fit right in.

“I’m treated like an adult.”

There’s no need to punch a clock, or ask for permission to take off early one afternoon to go see the doctor. We look at what you’re accomplishing, not how long you sit in front of a computer.

“I actually know what’s going on.”

You want to know the health of the company? Ok, we’ll show you the charts. Our executive team brings the transparency game—and strong. You’ll never feel left in the dark here.

“I feel like I’m making a difference.”

For over a decade, people have been buying YNAB and then telling their friends what a difference it has made in their lives. (Google us, or read some of our reviews on the app store, and you’ll see what we mean.) We love building something that has a huge positive impact on people’s lives.

We are intentional about creating an environment where every employee gets to do important work they love.

Some of Our Benefits:

Live Where You Want

We’re a distributed team, so you can live and work wherever you want. Proximity doesn’t influence productivity, and as we continue to increase our global reach, we’d love to have more team members in other timezones to help deliver timely responses to users. Our only requirement is that you have a reliable internet connection and can focus on work during your scheduled shift!

Take Vacation (Seriously)

We want you to take vacation. In fact, we have a minimum vacation policy of three weeks per year (plus two extra weeks for Christmas break). It’s important to get out and do something. We’ll look forward to seeing pictures of your vacation in our internal chat room, creatively named #office_wall.

Up Your Game

We’re serious about helping you improve your craft. We budget for it (hey-o!). Think conferences, books, dedicated time away from work to learn something new…it’s really up to you and your manager. But we love to see our people growing.

If You’re International

You’ll be set up as a contractor. Employee or contractor, it’s all the same to us. You’re part of the team. As for time zones, we’re flexible as long as the shift time works for you.

If You’re Stateside

You’ll be a W2 employee with fantastic health, dental, and vision insurance, where we cover 100% of the premium for you and your family. (No need to check your vision, you read that right, 100%. Although if you did need to check your vision, no big deal, we’ve got you covered!)

We also have Traditional and Roth 401k options. YNAB contributes three percent whether you choose to throw any money in there or not. It vests immediately. (Are you a personal finance junkie like Jesse? He set up YNAB’s 401k to have the lowest fee structure possible, where all plan costs are paid by YNAB, not your retirement nest egg. The investment funds available are fantastic, passively-managed, ultra low-cost index funds. You’re not a PF junkie? Then trust us, it’s great.)

Other Tidbits

  • When you start, we DEMAND (in a friendly, ALL CAPS IS YELLING way) that you fill out your “Bucket List” spreadsheet with 50 items. (That’s harder than it sounds!)
  • The bucket list also really helps in deciding what we should give you for your birthday and Christmas. No gift cards here. We tried that. Super boring.
  • We have a bonus plan. You’ll be in on that from day one. YNAB wins, you win. That kind of thing.
  • Did I mention we make a huge, positive difference in people’s lives? You may not think that matters much, but then a few months down the road you’ll realize it’s made your job really, really enjoyable. Don’t underestimate this one!

Want to come work with us? Because we’re a small team, our job openings are more infrequent than larger companies. To get notified of new positions, sign up for our newsletter to hear it first.
