There’s this great Seinfeld bit about reservations.
Seinfeld: I don’t understand. Do you have my reservation?
Rental Car Agent: We have your reservation, we just ran out of cars.
Seinfeld: But the reservation keeps the car here. That’s why you have the reservation.
Rental Car Agent: I think I know why we have reservations.
Seinfeld: I don’t think you do! You see, you know how to take the reservation, you just don’t know how to hold the reservations. And that’s really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them!
It’s funny because it is true, of course, and particularly this time of year—because reservations and resolutions? Not that different.
Anyone Can Make A Resolution
Anyone can make a resolution, but being resolute? Actually sticking with those resolutions is a whole different story.
Budgeting, saving, paying off debt—whatever your brand of financial resolution—they are all won over time. The long game. It’s just a matter of trying and trying and trying again.
The good news is we have thought about this a lot: How can we help people be more successful, and stick with budgeting long-term? For instance, we know that if you start with your goals, and focus your budget toward those goals, you will be more successful. So, you are on the right track!
The Rules Are The Magic
YNAB’s Four Rules were created to help people make budgeting a part of their life, something they could stick with for the long-term, and most importantly, be successful. See results. Because when you see results, it is much easier to keep going. The Rules are the magic.
If you really apply the Four Rules faithfully, they will help you stick with budgeting (and your financial resolutions), and when you slip up or life happens or your priorities change, they will help you adjust and keep going. (We also have lots of tips to help you make budgeting a habit that sticks.)
You’ve made the resolution, and we can help you hold the resolution until budgeting becomes a part of your life, and you don’t give it a second thought. You just do it, because it works; because having money and not being stressed is far better than stressing about whether or not you have enough money every month.
Make And Hold Your Resolution With YNAB
So, by all means, make the resolution, but don’t forget the most important part: the holding.
Stick it out. Push through. Be intentional about setting yourself up for success. This is a long-term gig. Don’t worry about little hiccups here and there. Don’t worry about how fast or slow it is happening. Just commit to the process, and if you stick with it, it will work. More on how:
